Research | Dance labs | Performance

Laboratory Athens, ardent supporter of artistic experimentation focused on the research of the Body, presents the project Dancing, Rolling, Spinning, Flying that will be running in 2021.

Dancing, Rolling, Spinning, Flying constitutes a dance action with educational purpose, initiated by choreographer, dancer and dance teacher Stella Fotiadi. It is implemented with the financial support and under the aegis of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, the financial support of Flux Laboratory Athens and in partnership with Duncan Dance Research Center.

Through the collaboration with public elementary and junior high Schools, taking place in school premises this summer, the project encourages students to attend a dance performance which combines under the umbrella of contemporary dance different street dance styles. The performance is followed by an extensive feedback session between artists and students, guided by dancers and dance teachers from different backgrounds and styles.

In Greece, contemporary dance is an art to which kids and teenagers - have relatively limited access. The objective of this initiative is taking performative out of institutional contexts and bringing it to schools. The intersection of contemporary dance with other dance styles and practices and the enhancement of the perception that dance “happens out there” highlight that dance act is an act of freedom, where everybody can fit in, sharing their knowledge and skills. Now, we ‘Dance, Roll, Spin, Fly’ together.

The project is a continuation of the dance program ‘What if we just dance?’. It was implemented during the school year 2019-2020 under the aegis and with the funding of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports. It also received support from Duncan Dance Research Center and in collaboration with the Experimental Pedagogy Lab of the Faculty of Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
